New look for Southend care of the elderly ward thanks to a £170,000 charity boost
One of our care of the elderly wards at Southend Hospital has received a dramatic makeover thanks to £170,000 of charitable funds.
Stambridge ward, which looks after elderly patients as well as those with dementia, has been completely refurbished from the ground up with new lighting, matte wood-effect flooring to reduce the risk of slips and falls, and improved signage making it easier for patients with dementia to find their way around with less confusion.
Bright artwork covering the walls shows scenes from nature, providing extra comfort for patients whilst also promoting patient conversation of happier times. The result is a ward that is brighter, safer, and more welcoming, providing a better experience for patients and their families during their stay in hospital.
The ward now also boasts a new relatives’ room, giving families the option to stay in hospital with their loved one, and a dedicated doctor’s office means clinicians can record their observations without having to leave the ward, ensuring they are on-hand at all times.
Helen Cullen, ward manager for Stambridge ward, said: “We’re really happy with the refurbishment, it’s a much nicer working environment for my team and better suits the needs of our patients”
Our Director, Lucy Thomas-Clayton, said: “These improvements were thanks to a £170,000 donation that someone had kindly left in their will. Legacy donations such as this make a huge lasting impact and I’m very pleased that we have been able to make such a positive difference to patients and staff”.
