Celebrating our extraordinary mud-loving staff at Broomfield Hospital

Back in November, an inspiring group of NHS staff (and some very supportive family members) from Broomfield Hospital stepped way outside their comfort zones – and straight into the mud – when they took on a very tough Nuclear Race to raise vital funds for their patients. Representing teams from the stroke wards, the Emergency Department, and other frontline services, our dedicated colleagues swapped scrubs for sports gear and tackled obstacles, freezing water, and mud, all with a shared mission to help patients stay active and reduce deconditioning during their hospital stay.

Together, the team raised an incredible £3,027 – funds that will directly support patients who are at risk of losing mobility, strength, and independence while in hospital and back on their road to independence at home.

This fundraising will enable staff to access specialist equipment, activity resources and training which exceed NHS funding alone. These items will help patients stay mobile, build confidence, and maintain dignity throughout their recovery. From stroke rehabilitation to the care of elderly patients, these tools make a meaningful difference – helping people regain strength not just for their hospital stay, but for life beyond it.

These incredible staff members are the very same people who care for these patients every day – making their achievement that much more inspiring. They see firsthand how important movement is to recovery, and they chose to go the extra mile to make sure their patients have every opportunity to thrive.

Clair Dade, Fundraising Coordinator for Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, said: “We are incredibly proud of this amazing group of fundraisers. They already give so much of themselves every single day in their roles, and to see them take on such a demanding challenge to support their patients is truly inspiring. The funds they’ve raised will have a direct and lasting impact on the people they care for”.
