Walk for Wards this September: Step up for the care that matters most to you

This September, we invite you to walk in honour of a ward or service close to your heart — just like Jessica, one of this year’s walkers, who is stepping out for the team at Southend Hospital’s Chemotherapy unit.
In April 2023, Jessica Ingle-Wood from Rayleigh, discovered a lump in her breast. She was quickly referred to Southend’s Breast clinic, and after scans and a biopsy, she was told the words no one wants to hear: “I’m sorry, it’s breast cancer.” Her thoughts immediately turned to her daughter, Dorothy, just three years old at the time.
Jessica was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, a particularly aggressive form. What followed was an exhausting journey made up of 16 rounds of chemotherapy with immunotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, followed by more immunotherapy.
But through it all, Jessica had the unwavering support of the incredible staff at Southend Hospital. “They were always reassuring,” she recalls, “The team on the Chemo unit will always have a place in my heart for being so supportive and amazing through the toughest time of my life.”
In early 2024, Jessica received the news she had been hoping for: she was cancer free.
Now, Jessica is taking part in Walk for Wards to say thank you to the team who stood by her during her toughest battle. “When I saw registrations had opened for Walk for Wards, and that you could pick which ward to donate to, it made me want to take part even more! It felt like another way that I could say thank you to the unit that saved my life.”
Join us on Sunday 21 September 2025 for our annual 7km seaside walk in support of the hospitals, wards, and NHS teams that mean the most to you. Whether you’re walking in memory, in celebration, or simply to give back, this free, family-friendly event offers the perfect way to show up for your local Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Hospital.
Walk for Wards is more than just a walk – it’s a celebration of local hospitals, their staff and care provided. Fancy dress is encouraged, alternatively charity t-shirts are available to purchase during registration or on the day.
Entry is free, with a minimum fundraising goal of £25. All proceeds go directly to the ward, department, or team of your choice.
