Stroke rehabilitation garden transformed thanks to community donations

Thanks to the generosity of our local supporters, patients on the Stroke Rehabilitation ward at Southend Hospital are now benefiting from an improved garden space designed to support both their recovery and overall wellbeing.
The £1,000 improvement project was made possible through charitable funding from donations made by the local community. These donations allowed our charity to respond to staff-identified needs and fund projects that enhance patient experience and care.
The funding request was submitted by Hannah Futcher, Stroke Rehab Team Lead and Physiotherapist, who saw the potential of the team’s outdoor area to offer patients a peaceful space to aid their recovery. The garden now features a range of improvements including a large outdoor clock, metal wall mural, comfortable new cushions, hosepipes, raised flower beds suitable for wheelchair users, and a variety of new plants and flowers. A water feature and gardening tools were also purchased, creating both a calming and interactive environment.
“This space gives our patients a taste of normality which aids in their rehabilitation,” said Hannah. “Whether they’re helping plant flowers, caring for the garden, or just enjoying the fresh air with visitors, it supports their mental well-being and confidence as they prepare to return home.”
Projects like this demonstrate the real impact community donations have – bringing comfort, dignity and therapeutic value to patients when they need it most.
