Broomfield volunteer takes on one million step challenge for St Andrew’s Appeal

One of our very own Broomfield Hospital volunteer’s really is going the extra mile to support patients at the St Andrew’s Centre for Burns and Plastics by taking on an incredible challenge to walk one million steps before Christmas.

Lee Petchelco, 74, from Sible Hedingham, has already completed more than 600,000 steps in nine weeks in support of our St Andrew’s Burns and Plastics Appeal.

Lee has volunteered at Broomfield Hospital for four years, spending the last three supporting patients attending appointments at the St Andrew’s Centre with refreshments, conversation and practical help.

Following a recent Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, Lee wanted to stay active while raising funds for a cause close to his heart.

“I enjoy seeing the regular patients and the progress they are making,” said Lee. “This challenge is a great way to keep fit, support the appeal and give something back.”

From countryside walks across Essex to family outings and volunteer shifts at the hospital, every step is helping Lee reach his ambitious target.

Funds raised will support our St Andrew’s Burns and Plastics Appeal, helping enhance facilities, comfort and support for burns, plastics and dermatology patients receiving specialist care at Broomfield Hospital.

Faye Bailey, Individual Giving Manager for Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, said: “Lee is such a valued member of our volunteer team and we’re incredibly grateful for his support. Having already taken on over 600,000 steps, he’s well on his way to reaching his goal and making a real difference for patients and families.”
