A big celebration as we reopen the doors to Polly’s Pad at Basildon Hospital

We’re delighted to reopen the doors to Polly’s Pad, our much-loved family accommodation at Basildon Hospital. Fully funded and maintained through charitable donations, Polly’s Pad has been a real sanctuary for families facing the stress and uncertainty of having a child in hospital, providing a comfortable place to stay as close as is possible.
The bungalow has received a much-needed refurbishment thanks to a generous £10,000 grant from The Kusuma Trust. Combined with the ongoing support of our donors, this funding helps ensure Polly’s Pad remains available free of charge for families when they need it most (stays are allocated through the hospital’s Children’s and Neonatal Units, ensuring families who need it most can access accommodations).
By removing the worry of travel, accommodation costs and the practicalities of life that remain even when a child is in hospital, this very special place helps parents and carers focus on what matters most: being there for their child.
Jerusha Murdoch-Kelly, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s Deputy Director of Nursing for Paediatrics and Neonates, said: “Polly’s Pad gives families the opportunity to spend time together when their child is in hospital in a home-from-home environment.
“It allows parents and carers to rest while still being close by. We know this closeness makes a difficult time a little easier and we are so pleased that Polly’s Pad is once again available to provide that vital support.”
Fully funded and maintained by Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, Polly’s Pad features three bedrooms with shower rooms, a communal living area and kitchen facilities.
Lucy Thomas-Clayton, Director of Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, said: “We are so pleased to reopen after a lot of work behind the scenes.
“Having a child in hospital can be overwhelming for families. Polly’s Pad offers a special place of comfort, warmth and reassurance, all made possible thanks to the generosity of our supporters.
“We know this accommodation will once again play a vital role in helping children and their loved ones stay connected when they need each other the most.”
At Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity, we fund projects that go beyond NHS funding to enhance the experience of patients and families across Basildon, Southend and Broomfield hospitals. Polly’s Pad holds a special place in the hearts of many of our individual and corporate donors. As a service fully funded through charitable support, it is an extraordinary example of how donations provide practical help, comfort and reassurance at some of life’s most difficult moments.
